August's precipitation

  1. National precipitation for August 2024: 87.3 mm less than normal (225.3 to 346.7 mm), / the second lowest

  2. Number of precipitation days: 8.4 days less than the average (13.8 days)./ the third lowest

  3. Cause: There were many clear days as the Tibetan high pressure, which developed in August, expanded to the north of Korea, and the upper jet stayed in the northeast of Korea. In addition, there was not much precipitation due to rain mainly due to atmospheric instability caused by local ground heating in the high pressure zone

In addition, the amount of precipitation nationwide was 212.3mm less than last year. -423.2mm to -113.1mm compared to last year

The relationship between heat waves and precipitation

Analysis of the Lack of Precipitation during Heat Wave

1) precipitation concentrates on the rainy season

Cause: Water vapor introduced along the edge of the North Pacific high pressure and cold air from the upper layers from the north of Korea collide on a stagnant front, causing strong rain clouds to develop and rain that fall strongly in a narrow area.

2) Less precipitation after the rainy season

Except for the rainy season, there were many sunny days in the high pressure zone, so it rained less than usual during the same period

After the end of the rainy season, the upper strong wind zone (jet stream), which causes ground low pressure, was pushed to the north. As a result, it rained mainly in the form of showers due to atmospheric instability which was caused by local ground heating in the area under the influence of high pressure.

->>Light rain did not fall steadily throughout the rainy season, but strong rain poured into a narrow area in a short period of time, and the effect of lowering the temperature due to rain was small.

3)Late July to late August, low rain and high temperatures

Convection was active due to typhoons in the northwest Pacific, and the North Pacific anticyclone moved northward from the average year and expanded to Korea. In addition, as convective activity increased in northwest India, Tibetan anticyclone developed and expanded to the northeast of Korea.

Therefore, two high pressures stayed over Korea at the same time and affected it together, and as a result, the upper jet stream was pushed north of Korea than usual, leading to a clear day, increasing temperature and less precipitation

As typhoons 'Jongdari' and 'Sansan' passed around the Korean Peninsula in the late summer, hot and humid air was supplied to Korea, leading to tropical nights until late summer
